Black Lives Matter: F1 Champion Lewis Hamilton Attends Peaceful Protest In London
Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton attended a ‘Black Lives Matter’ protest at Hyde Park in London on Sunday.
Hamilton has been vocal in the fight against racism after George Floyd – an African-American man – died while in police custody in the United States on May 25.
Went down to Hyde Park today for the peaceful protest and I was so proud to see in person so many people of all races and backgrounds supporting this movement. I was proud to be out there acknowledging and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, and my black heritage. I was so happy to see people of all ages, sporting Black Lives Matter signs and saying it just as passionately as I was. I was also happy to see so many white supporters out there today in the name of equality for all. It was really moving. I’m feeling extremely positive that change will come, but we cannot stop now. “From kids throwing things at me while karting, to being taunted by fans in blackface at a 2007 Grand Prix, one of my first Formula One races.
“Even now, the media ask me different questions than they do my competitors and make accusations directly and indirectly — you’re not British enough, not humble enough, not loved enough by the public.

“Achei que tinha sido uma posição forte,” disse Hamilton. “Depois ele perdeu o emprego e ele era um grande atleta. Falei com ele há uns anos, pouco depois disso. (…) Eu tinha um capacete vermelho com o número dele mas fui de certa forma silenciado. Disseram-me para não o apoiar e eu arrependo-me. É importante para mim fazer a minha parte neste momento.”
O “momento” a que Hamilton se referia era o protesto antes do Grande Prémio da Áustria, a primeira prova do Mundial de 2020. Inspirado pelo protesto de Kaepernick, em 2016, o hexacampeão do mundo de Fórmula 1 ajoelhou-se, sendo acompanhado pela maioria dos seus colegas de grelha. O inglês excusou-se a comentar as posições de Verstappen, Leclerc, Raikkönen, Kvyat, Sainz e Giovinazzi que, apesar de presentes no protesto, permaneceram de pé.
No dia anterior, Lewis Hamilton tinha expressado a sua desilusão por alguns pilotos não se terem pronunciado para condenar o racismo. Como tinha sido planeado, no entanto, todos os pilotos da grelha usaram t-shirts que diziam “Acabem com o racismo”, exceto Hamilton, cuja t-shirt dizia “Black Lives Matter”.

En una entrevista al diario ‘El Mercurio’ ha hablado de las diferentes acciones que ha llevado a cabo el británico: “Respeto muchísimo a Lewis, pero ¿por qué convertirse en militante? Él siempre ha sido aceptado y se ha ganado el respeto de todo el mundo. Creo que el objetivo de esto es pretencioso. Así lo siento y está creando un problema que no existe.
Como se constata, tem gente que enxerga mas não consegue ver “o problema”. Aliás, Mario Andretti perdeu uma boa oportunidade de ficar calado.
